Memories
A wagon powered by a couple of hard-to-manage mules was my first transportation to attend services at Richland. I have
no memories of that first wagon experience because I was only two or three years old. However, this tale was shared so
many times by those involved, it exists in my memory bank as if I actually remember the experience. The often-told story
began with a wagon drawn by two independent, stubborn mules...more

When Richland had their homecoming the men would back hay wagons in the front yard and the ladies would put their
food around on the edges where everyone could reach. We would then eat under the shade of the trees.

Earlier years at Richland, one of the ways I remember getting to sample goodies from the Richland cooks was to go home
with them and help them can or freeze fruits and vegetables from their gardens or just visit with their kids. As I have my
own Grandkids, now and frequently cook for them, I often think of how so many of the women at Richland managed
financially and physically to feed their families and guests with such a limited budget and very limited kitchen
conveniences. What was “theirs was yours”.
Another heartwarming memory was to go to some lady’s house whose turn it was to have a quilting. What a treat for after
school snack with what was left from that “quiltin’ dinner”. Fried liver, fresh pork chops, country ham, sweet homemade
butter, homemade rolls, skillet cornbread, fried chicken, hog cracklins, black eyed peas with hog jowl, greens and ham
hocks, mashed potatoes, corn and green bean succotash, fruit cobblers, poor man’s apple pie, bread pudding, fresh
cream, custard pie, handmade fried apple pies, or a dish of something from the cellar. Anyone’s delight, probably not a
dish prepared from a box that was a quick fix. Also, the ladies were different than when you would see them at church.
They would joke and cut up, and giggle at the quiltings.

I guess the one thing that I still laugh about is the time Doris Shultz kept punching Jerry to stay awake & be alert with no
results; I was sitting behind them, (in the wing with Misty), so the next time he began to doze, I tapped him on the
shoulder and he was so startled he never thought about even relaxing again...more

My fondest memory is asking Mrs. Minnie about a cake recipe one day when we had Easter Dinner at church, and rest
assured, the next Sunday, I had that recipe in my hand :-) Bro. Larry watching Mrs. Minnie walk away, and he smiling,
looking like he was just as much in love with her as he was at 19 years old. And Bro. JD, holding the door open for Mrs.
JoAnne every time she gets in the car, and I bet she even still blushes when he compliments her :-)

The entire homecoming day (2006) was a special blessing. Just meeting with all of our friends and family, and our
brothers and sisters in the Lord, and enjoying a day of fellowship together was wonderful. But the one thing that blessed
my heart more than anything else was the recorded interviews with our senior members. Especially listening to Mrs.
Lorene Atherton give her testimony of her salvation. Mrs. Atherton is in her 90's now, and I have gone to church with her
all of my 59 years. But I had never heard her tell of her salvation. I never once doubted that Mrs Atherton was a saved
lady, but listening to her tell how that she called on the Lord for salvation, and how that the Lord heard her cry, and how
that he changed her life for ever, was the pinnacle of the day for me. Now I know without a doubt that Mrs. Lorene has,
and knows, the same Savior that I know. Praise be HIS name. What the Lord did for her, He did also for me. And he can
do the same for you if you would but repent, and believe.

I remember baptisms in Oct. 1963. We drove out to Leland and Lorene Atherton's on Hwy. 136 across the Ohio Co. line.
Bro. Howard Wilson baptized us in a pond in the pasture field on their farm. We then changed our wet clothes at the
Atherton's house.
Someone would drawn a bucket of water from a neighbor's yard. They would sit it near the back door for the congregation
to drink from, if thirsty.
After church on Sunday nights, some of us would gather at Minnie and Larry Poiles for snacks and dessets to socialize.

From time to time I do think of the special people that touched my life here at Richland. The best Sunday School
teachers, I enjoyed them each one as a child. They never told my mom when I would not set still in their class!! These
teachers would spoil all of us. They just took you under their wings and you could tell they loved us and cared, also.
What really stands out in my mind is the silent members that we had. These ladies never sang a special song in the choir
or for the church. However, you could tell they loved the Lord 'causes' they did have a special song in their heart. I
remember where they each sat in every service at church. These silent members spoke loud by the way they lived their
lives before us. They all have gone to live with their Lord and Savior. O what a stand they took for the Lord, I won't soon
forget them.

I was saved at Richland Baptist Church when I was thirteen years old. Brother Herbert Ashby was the pastor. Bro. Leo
Gailesy was the visiting preacher that held the revival. The revival went for two weeks at night and also there were day
services...more

I have many great memories of the people at RICHLAND BAPTIST CHURCH that impacted my life from 1946 through
1951. Being four years old when Dad accepted the pastorate, some memories are a bit dim; but, I very much remember
the lasting friendships my family enjoyed from some of the most friendly and loving people in the world...more

I remember when I was small and staying with J.D. and Joan we attended a Baptismal service at Junior and Lorene
Atherton's house and being young was taking this ritual with great interest asking all the normal kid questions Joan
threatened to throw me in the pond if I didn't sit still (she was just kidding) I remember Elzy Poiles leading the song "Shall
we Gather at the River". This was a memory I will always hold dear to my heart...more
